Tecno launches Phantom X2 with Dimensity 9000, X2 Pro with vertical retractable lens

Tecno’s high-end Phantom line returns with new camera innovations and a more powerful chipset. There are two phones, one of which has the first ever pop-up vertical camera, and we’ll reap the benefits in a minute.

Both the Tecno Phantom X2 and Phantom X2 Pro are powered by the Dimension 9000 (also not the version). While not the latest, it is still a 4nm chip from the TSMC foundry using the latest technology (Cortex-X2 Prime CPU cores, three A710s, four A510s, and one Mali-G710 MC10 GPU), compared to the Helio G95 used in the original The Phantom X. The X2 phone uses LPDDR5X RAM — 8GB for the Vanilla, 12GB for the Pro — plus 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage.

The X2 series improves on the original Phantom by running an AMOLED display at 120Hz instead of 90Hz. The panel has a slightly longer diagonal of 6.8 inches (instead of 6.7 inches) and has a FHD+ (20:9) resolution. However, the aspect ratio is different (20:9 instead of 19.5:9), so the phone is slightly squished. In addition, the screen is even more secure as it is protected by Gorilla Glass Victus.

The Dimension 9000 proved to be very efficient and here, for both phones, it packs a decently sized 5,160mAh battery. The larger battery is paired with faster charging at 45W (for comparison, the Phantom X has a 4,700mAh battery that charges at 33W).

That said, it’s time to talk about the camera system, which is the biggest difference between the Phantom X2 and X2 Pro. First, how to tell them apart? The Pro model has a decorative ring around the vertically retractable lens, unique to the Phantom X2 Pro.

The magic of the pop-up lens is that it has a very bright f/1.5 aperture, wide enough for a 65mm smartphone lens. For example, the Galaxy S22+ has a 70mm telephoto lens with an f/2.4 aperture. The Xperia 5 IV has a 60mm lens that also has an f/2.4 aperture.

This has two benefits. First, it allows more light to reach the relatively large 50MP sensor (ISOCELL JN1, 0.64µm raw, 1.28µm binned). The second is a result of the large aperture and large sensor: the shallow depth of field creates natural-looking bokeh that helps separate the subject from the background, which is great for portrait photography.

While primarily a portrait camera, the 65mm lens is long enough to be used as a telephoto lens at 2.5x magnification. As for why it’s a “retractable” lens, it’s to keep the phone slim: A motorized mechanism extends the lens outward when in use, then retracts.

The X2 Pro also has a better main camera and is the follow up to the original Phantom X. It uses a 1/1.3″ ISOCELL 3.0 sensor (Samsung ISOCELL CNG) with a resolution of 50MP (native pixel size of 1. 2 µm).It’s joined by a 13MP ultra-wide-angle camera that can double as a macro camera thanks to autofocus.

While a large 1/1.3-inch sensor is a brutal way to get more light, the Phantom X2 takes a smart approach. First, it uses an RGBW sensor, where the “W” stands for subpixel. This sensor captures the 60% more light Light. Unlike the Pro’s all-plastic lens, this camera uses a glass element that lets in 30 percent more light. The combination of the two makes it possible to capture twice the amount of light that the sensor can capture compared to traditional designs.

The X2 uses the same 13MP ultrawide camera module, which has a macro mode, and adds a 2MP depth sensor to calculate bokeh (since there’s no dedicated portrait lens). Both phones come with a 32MP selfie camera (similar to the Camon 19 Pro mod).

The Phantom X2 Pro is available in Mars Orange (which is also the Ec-Friendly version that uses recycled plastic for the back cover) and Stardust Grey. The vanilla X2 is also available in Stardust Gray and Moonlight Silver.
